Equipment Matters Created: Thu July 29, 2010, 12:49 pm

I am often asked what I think of women's golf equipment. Is there enough selection? Too much selection? How do I know what is right for me? Can I play with my husband's old clubs? And of course then there is my personal favourite..I'm not really that good, so does it really matter?

Ladies - LISTEN UP!! Equipment matters!! Let's compare golf equipment to other sports. If you were going to learn to ski and you rented skis that were too long for you, would you still be able to learn? Probably, but it would take you longer and you would have a more difficult time, therefore not making it an enjoyable experience. As a tennis player, could you play tennis in shoes that were too big for you? Probably, but it would make it more difficult to maneuver around the court. And you would also end up with huge blisters when you were done

For whatever reason, women seem to "gloss over" equipment as though it were an insignificant part of the game. Golf equipment is extremely important for all skill levels. I could write an entire novel on the subject, but for now let's cover the basics.. your driver.

If you doing nothing else, consider this: equipment has evolved significantly over the last three to five years making clubs more forgiving and easier to hit. As an LPGA Professional I still believe firmly in taking advantage of every advantage given to you with this game. So if you are using a driver that is older than five years, you are starting at a disadvantage. Visit your local golf retailer or pro-shop and speak with an expert. If you are having challenges with direction, distance and/or height, you can actually purchase a driver to help with this. Example: not getting enough height off the tee. What is the loft on your driver? 10 degrees? 11 degrees? Drivers are now made with lofts as high as 14 or 15 degrees. Does your tee shot always go to the right? Or the left? Some drivers have weights in their heads which helps ensure the clubface is square at impact..this helps the ball go straight!!

Whether new to the game, or a seasoned player, selecting proper equipment can be daunting for golfers of all skill levels.Seek advice from a professional and take your time. Many pro-shops retailers will let you demo (try) different clubs - take advantage of this. Make sure you try more than one so that you have something to compare it too.

And remember ladies..golf is supposed to be fun.
